"Piano Tuning" is by definition the process of adjusting the tension of the strings in a piano, so that these strings will produce the correct sounds of the "musical scale."
There are some 220 strings in the modern piano of 88 keys. The "correct sounds" will come from these strings when they are put under tension averaging about 165 pounds per string. 220 times 165 equals 36,300 pounds of gross vertical tension. This tension must be minutely adjusted to create a "musical scale."
